Overview

We are happy to have your family at our parish and welcome your decision to conduct your own faith formation for your children who are preparing for First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.

The Diocese of San Diego asks that your parish be involved in the preparation for these sacraments as you homeschool your children. Essentially, efforts to homeschool your children in preparation for sacraments must be connected to the life of the parish since families are part of the larger ecclesial community.

To help you observe the guidelines from our diocese we have prepared a unique preparation process for your family.

We will not accept preparation done in private which had no oversight by the pastor or Catechetical Ministry Office.

Please contact us as soon as possible if you have already begun sacramental prep or if you plan to homeschool your children to prepare them for First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation so we can share with you what we require.

Basic Components of Homeschool Sacramental Preparation

1. Registration in the Santa Sophia Faith Formation program via the Catechetical Ministry Office
2. Participation in the parish Sunday Mass
3. Pastor approval of intended text for use during preparation if different from the text we provide
4. Submission of a monthly progress report form
5. Participation in parent meetings and parent preparation meetings
6. Participation in a parish retreat

Additional Notes

1. Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion happens over 2 years
2. Children who are 6 years old should begin a focused study on the Holy Mass during year 1
3. During year 2, children will begin a focused study on Reconciliation, Holy Communion, and preparing to receive these sacraments.
4. Children will receive Reconciliation and Holy Communion during year 2, when they are 7 years old.
