Like the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick is another healing sacrament of the Church, carrying on Jesus’ own ministry of healing. No longer know as “Last Rites,” this sacrament calls on God’s healing for those physically or psychologically ill.
This sacrament may be received by any baptized Catholic over the age of seven with a serious illness or preparing for surgery.
Anointing may be received more than once in the course of an illness, and may also be received when death is near. It is not offered after death since only living persons can receive the sacraments.
