I am writing this letter to thank you if you have contributed to the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal for the Diocese of San Diego, and to invite you to participate if you have not. The theme for this year is “Celebrating the Year of Mercy.” This theme is one of compassion, hope, and love. As disciples, we are called to trust in Jesus’ mercy and recognize Him in the poor, in those who suffer, and in those in need. As Jesus reminds us in the Gospel of Luke, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”
As you know, our parish goal for this year is $65,000. So far 162 parishioners have pledged toward this effort. Last year 262 families participated in the Annual Catholic Appeal which is one fifth of our total registered family members. I am confident that with your help we can reach and exceed our goal. Once we reach the goal, any excess funds will be returned to the parish. Likewise, any shortfall will have to be paid out of our operating budget.
Our participation in the Annual Catholic Appeal is our response to the call of discipleship. Your gifts makes possible the work that affects so many in our diocese: children attending Catholic schools, formation of seminarians to priesthood, formation of candidates to the permanent diaconate, care for our retired priests, the evangelization and accompaniment of Young Adults, and the consoling presence of Christ for those who are imprisoned.
Your contributions impact the lives of 15 candidates for priesthood, 24 candidates in the permanent diaconate ministry formation and 58 retired priests; approximately 300,000 poor and vulnerable are helped, and 11 Catholic schools and thousands of students are impacted. Your gift also helps us support the Prison Ministry, which serves 27 detention facilities with approximately 400 volunteers impacting the lives of 28,000 inmates in jails and prisons.
For your convenience, I have enclosed the “Celebrating the Year of Mercy” brochure, pledge response card, and envelope. Please make your check to the Diocese of San Diego Annual Catholic Appeal and return it along with the pledge card in the collection at Mass or to the parish office. You can also make a contribution on-line at the diocesan website: www.sdcatholic.org. In either case, please return the pledge card to the parish office for our record keeping.
Through your gifts, we impact thousands of lives in our local Church Community. Thank you for your support as we participate in living the Church’s mission to be witnesses of compassion and mercy to those in need.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Rev. Devdas Masillamony
