RITE of CHRISTIAN INITIATION for CHILDREN (RCIC)

What is RCIC?

This form of the rite of Christian initiation is intended for children, not baptized as infants or who are baptized but have not received any formal catechesis, who have attained the use of reason (age 7 +) and are of catechetical age.

They seek Christian initiation either at the direction of their parents or guardians or, with parental permissions, on their own initiative.  Such children are capable of receiving and nurturing a personal faith and of recognizing an obligation in conscience.  But they cannot yet be treated as adults because, at this stage of their lives, they are dependent on their parents or guardians and are still strongly influenced by their companions and their social surroundings.

What is the process and when are the classes?

Children beginning this process are placed into regular Sunday Religious Education classes with their peers.  During the first Academic year these children will complete the Rite of Acceptance during a Sunday mass.  During their second Academic year they will continue in classes with their peers and also attend classes together for immediate preparation for their Sacraments of Initiation.  The RCIC coordinator is Norma Tsutsui who teaches the Sacramental preparation sessions.

When will children receive the sacraments?

All students who are ready and prepared will receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil in their second Academic year of classes.

How do I enroll my child?

Enrollment for RCIC occurs simultaneously with the enrollment for Sunday Religious Education classes.  Parents may register new students by calling the Catechetical Ministry Office (619) 463-6011.

What is required of a child in RCIC?

Regular attendance at Mass and Sunday classes, as well as active participation in class discussions and activities.

All children need a sponsor who is an active member in the Catholic Church (either at Santa Sophia or at another parish) who will be able to be present at the Easter Vigil.  There will be various activities for the sponsor and child to complete together throughout the year.  if the family is unable to find a sponsor for the child, we will help find a good match in the parish.

Can more than one child from the same family be enrolled in RCIC?

Yes!  In many cases when a family is joining the church together, there is more than one child involved.  It it highly encouraged to enroll all children at the same time.
